Are you confused by what's taking place in the bullring?

Reglamento de Espectaculos Taurinos

Article 34

The mozos de caballos, of whom there must be a sufficient number, will help the picadores mount their horses, adjust the stirrups, remove injured horses from the ring, remove the saddles and bridles from horses which have been killed and lead those horses which can leave the ring by themselves to the grooms as quickly as possible. These employees must be careful to help the horses to their feet without dragging them and must not remove the bridles from horses until they are dead.

They may not gossip among themselves nor attract the attention of the toro except when a diestro is in danger and they are attempting to make a quite and they may not pull the horses by their bits to force them into the suerte. Two mozos will station themselves behind each picador to help him. They may only stay in the ring during the suerte de varas and otherwise they must occupy the burladero to which they were assigned in Article 8.

Infractions of any of these regulations will be punished by a fine of 250 pesetas with 500 pesetas for a second offence. The culprit may be banned from the ring for a number of festejos at the discretion of the Autoridad for a third offence.

Do you want to understand the background of bullfighting?

Reglamento de Espectaculos Taurinos: Preamble

Gentlemen:
Since its publication on 12 July 1930 the Reglamento de Espectaculos Taurinos has been subject to successive modification to clarify its rules and to incorporate improvements which have become advisable with time, and especially to make those changes which have been dictated by the events of the past few years and which have been made to prevent the crimes and corrupt practices which have disgraced the fiesta nacional.

Such changes have been distributed among a number of Ordenes Ministeriales and circulares which have been augmented so much with the passage of time that familiarity with and knowledge of the application of the Reglamento has become difficult. An overall revision is thus advisable and this has been undertaken after consideration of the opinions and assessments of the various organizations involved in these events.

By virtue of his office this Ministerio has approved the following rewritten text of the new Reglamento de Espectaculos.

Madrid, 15 March 1962,

Alonso Vega
Director General de Seguridad y Gobernadores civiles.

Reglamento de Espectaculos Taurinos

Article 9.

Plazas de toros, regardless of their class must not have rings with diameters of more than 60m nor less than 45m and the barrera which encircles the ring must be made of wood 1.6m high with four openings each 3m wide closed by double gates. These gates must be exactly flush with the interior of the barrera and must be furnished with easily-operated latches which are strong enough to resist any of the occurrences which take place during the lidia without damage. One of these gateways will be the puerta de cuadrillas and another open into the arrastre.

What do the rules say about the matador's sword?

Reglamento de Espectaculos Taurinos

Article 115

The espadas must use a normal steel sword during the faena de muleta except when a physical deficiency will impede him. In this case he should submit to a medical examination by the chief doctor of the emergency room before the beginning of the corrida .

When the espada's condition is confirmed by the examination this doctor will complete an appropriate certificate which will be sent to the Presidente who may order that the situation be brought to the notice of the public before the beginning of the third tercio by showing a notice in the callejon which says " Previo reconocimiento falcultivo se autoriza al espada de turno para ser virse del estoque simulado ". (The espada may carry a simulated sword as a result of an earlier medical examination.)
To properly inform the spectators this notice will be displayed before the beginning of the corrida or in lieu of this it must be shown each time.

The estoque de descabellar must have a standard shape being provided with a point in the form of a cross 78mm long composed of three pieces which are: a central or controlling part 22mm long, 15mm high and 10mm thick with beveled edges which do not impede the matador 's line of sight and two lateral pieces which are oval in cross-section and 28 mm long by 8 mm high and 5 mm thick. This cross piece must be placed exactly 100 mm from the point of the estoque.

An espada who uses the estoque de descabellar without having made a normal sword-thrust attempting to kill will be fined 5,000 pesetas.
